A cool bit of news crossed my path today that I wanted to share with you guys. I’ve always had a love for comics that are a little weird and a lot of fun and Eric Powell’s The Goon has always been that and more. I mean, come on, old school EC horror with gangsters and a sense of humor. What’s not to love? So needless to say I got a little giddy when this started making the rounds a few years back. Unfortunately, that’s all we got…
Until now. Thanks to the good folks at Kickstarter, we have the chance to jump some Hollywood red tape and not only get something awesome made but support a great independent comic creator in the process. Head on over and let’s get this flick made, folks!

Holy lolcats, it’s been a year?! After sitting on the cartooning sidelines for so long, it’s kinda crazy to think I’ve actually got twelve straight months of comics under my belt. Not to mention that I’ve got great folks like yourself tuning in each week!
So, where are we at? I’ve definitely found the last year to be a good learning experience as a cartoonist. Mistakes have been made. Lessons have been learned. And with luck, I’ve managed not to burn the damn House down. Here are a few of the things I’ve walked away with:
- DRAW MORE! The last year has been really been a lesson in the 10,000 hour way of thinking and I want to see how much further it can go.
- Shorter, more focused storytelling is the way to go. While the freedom of webcomics has allowed me to take however many pages I needed for a story, I’m seeing advantages to the twenty-odd page rule of your average monthly comic book. More stories a year and even more incentive to make every page count can only be a good thing. Of course, if I stumble into the makings of the great American graphic novel in issue four all bets are off…
- As someone who wants to do this for a living, I really need to be a better steward of what goes on beyond the drawing board. It’s been an amazing year even with the highs and lows in readership but I need to do more to make the highs higher and the lows…you get the picture. Between things like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, etc., I’ve been way too lax in the kind of community building needed to draw more folks in and keep them invested. Hell, my first post on this blog was to tell you I wasn’t a blogger; which became a self-fulfilling prophecy in my not using the best way to start a conversation with you guys. It may not happen overnight but I want to end this trend and really give the House of Odd everything I’ve got.
Thanks again to all the true believers showing up every week to give Whizbang! another go. Here’s to another year of the Great Experiment…

Just a quick heads up to my fellow gamers out there: Humble Indie Bundle V is live! It’s a great way to stock up on a bunch of good games, including freakin’ PSYCHONAUTS, and help out Child’s Play to boot! Head on over but remember: don’t be cheap; the games are for you but the money’s for the kids!

Having grown up with the only real superhero blockbuster being Burton’s Batman, it’s mind-boggling that something like the Avengers even exists. A stable of big budget, well casted comic book movies merging Voltron-style into one mega box office destoryer. Directed by Joss Whedon. And released on May the freakin’ Fourth be with you. Truly the geeks have inherited the earth.
This really is something you need to experience with popcorn in hand and sticky floors under feet so to hell with spoilers. All I can say is that I went in really holding back my expectations and left having seen a movie that joins the Dark Knight in defining how superhero movies should be made. Now I just want to know how their going to pull off the sequel they teased…
Wow, crazy last couple of days. Just wanted to say greetings and salutations to all the new folks that have been digging the comic this week. Remember to stop by next Thursday for another bit of Captain Whizbang goodness or help yourself to ye ole RSS feed.
Also wanted to give an update on the comic’s schedule. I’m still on one update a week for the time being but trust me when I say nobody wants to get back to full steam more than me. Hopefully a combination of built up buffer and personal crud calmed down will be happening in time for issue three to get a running start.
